22 January 2017
French Socialist Primary
A first round primary will be held on 22 January 2017 to select the left-wing candidate for the French presidential election, later this year. A run-off is scheduled for 29 January 2017.
It will be the second open primary held by the socialist parties, after the primary in 2011, where Francois Hollande defeated Martine Aubry to become the Socialist Party nominee. Hollande went on to defeat incumbent president Nicolas Sarkozy in the 2012 presidential election.
Seven candidates will be running for the first round: Manuel Valls, Arnaud Montebourg, Benoit Hamont, Vincent Peillon, Sylvia Pinel, Francois de Rugy and Jean-Luc Bennahmias.
