News Event:

The regional Catalan government plans to hold a referendum on secession from Spain on 01 October.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has insisted that the vote is unconstitutional and has pledged to prosecute officials who take formal steps to hold it.

Parliament in the prosperous northeastern Catalonia region has approved procedural changes, allowing a declaration of independence within 48 hours.

The ongoing issue has embittered relations between Spain and Catalonia for years, with the last illegal vote held on 09 November 2014.
