1 October 17
The regional Catalan government is to hold what it says is a binding referendum on secession from Spain on Sunday 1 October.
The Spanish central government insists the vote is unconstitutional and has pledged to prosecute officials who take formal steps to stage it.
Authorities in the northeastern Spanish region of 7.5 million people say they intend to ensure that the poll will take place peacefully, despite a crackdown on the vote by Madrid.
